Why a Sense of Belonging Matters in Your College Search

Why a Sense of Belonging Matters in Your College Search

Grades, programs, cost and location matter. But there’s another factor families should be researching before making one of the biggest decisions of their lives: Will I feel like I belong here?

When families research colleges, we tend to focus on the things we can easily measure.

Acceptance rates. Majors. Rankings. Cost. Class sizes. Graduation rates. Internship opportunities.

All of those things matter.

But research continues to point to something that can be much harder to measure—and incredibly important to a student's college experience: a sense of belonging.

Students who feel connected to their college community are more likely to thrive academically, persist through challenges and ultimately graduate. Belonging can influence everything from a student's willingness to ask for help to whether they become involved on campus and develop meaningful relationships.

In other words, finding a college isn't only about asking:

“Can I get in?”

or even:

“Can we afford it?”

Families should also be asking:

“Can I see myself belonging here?”

The Experience That Stayed With Me

Long before we launched Campuswink, I watched a friend—and fellow mom—struggle right alongside her son after he chose a college where he simply didn't feel like he fit in.

On paper, the school may have checked the boxes.

But once he was actually living there, something wasn't right. He hadn't found his people. He didn't feel connected to the community, and that affected far more than whether he was having fun at college.

He transferred the following year.

At his new school, he found his people and his place. His grades improved. His mental health improved. His overall college experience improved.

Watching that experience unfold made me wonder:

What if he had been able to talk honestly with a current student before choosing that school?

Not during a scripted presentation.

Not through a perfectly curated admissions page.

Not by scrolling through hundreds of anonymous opinions online.

What if he could have sat down with someone actually living the experience and asked the deeper questions that mattered specifically to him?

Would he have made the same decision?

There's no way to know. One conversation can never guarantee that a college will be the right fit.

But that experience planted a seed.

The Information Exists. The People Exist. The Connection Was Missing.

Prospective students have access to more college information than ever before.

You can find admission statistics in seconds. You can watch campus videos, compare financial aid, read reviews, search Reddit, follow student creators and now ask AI almost anything about a college.

But there are some questions that are best answered by someone actually living the experience.

How easy was it to make friends here?

What happens on campus on a random Friday night?

Do students stay on campus on the weekends?

How competitive does it feel?

How hard is it to actually get involved in the clubs everyone talks about?

What's the dorm experience really like?

Do you feel supported academically?

What kind of student seems happiest here?

And perhaps most importantly:

Do you feel like you belong here? Why?

The answers won't be identical for every student—and that's precisely the point.

College fit is personal.

Go Beyond “Do You Like It Here?”

If you're trying to understand whether you could belong at a college, don't simply ask a current student whether they like their school.

Go deeper.

Ask them how they found their friends. Ask when the campus first started feeling like home. Ask what surprised them freshman year. Ask whether clubs are welcoming or competitive to join. Ask where students go when they're struggling. Ask what the social scene is like for someone who doesn't want to participate in Greek life—or someone who does.

Ask:

“What type of person thrives here?”

Then listen carefully to the answer.

The goal isn't to find a student whose college experience you can perfectly replicate. That's impossible.

The goal is to gather another layer of information that helps you picture what your experience might look like.

Why We Built Campuswink

This is one of the reasons we created Campuswink.

We want prospective students to engage in meaningful, efficient research that helps them create a smart college list—one that includes schools their families can realistically afford, schools that offer what they're looking for academically, and schools where they have a strong chance of finding their people and their place.

Campuswink connects prospective students and families directly with current college students for personalized campus tours and virtual conversations.

We're not replacing official college tours. We're adding another layer to the research process: the perspective of the students already living it.

Because choosing a college is a huge decision.

And while no amount of research can guarantee that a student will feel at home once they arrive, asking better questions before making that decision can give families information they might otherwise discover only after move-in day.

That matters.

Add Belonging to Your College Research Checklist

As you build and narrow your college list, research the measurable things.

Look at affordability. Study the academics. Understand admission requirements. Compare graduation rates. Investigate career outcomes.

But don't stop there.

Talk to people.

Ask the questions that aren't answered in a brochure.

Try to understand what everyday life actually feels like.

And give belonging a place on your college research checklist.

Because ultimately, you're not just choosing where you'll take classes for four years.

You're choosing where you'll live, grow, build relationships and hopefully find a place that feels like yours.
