What Current Students Wish You Knew Before Choosing a College
Current college students share the surprising realities they wish they'd known before committing. Learn from their experiences to make a smarter college choice.

Lessons from the Trenches
We asked current college students across the country: "What do you wish you'd known before choosing your school?" Their answers reveal the gap between college marketing and college reality—and offer invaluable wisdom for prospective students.
Here's what they told us.
About Academics
"Your major might change—and that's okay."
Reality: Approximately 50-70% of students change their major at least once. That exciting neuroscience program might not matter if you discover you love economics instead.
What to look for: Schools with strong programs across multiple fields, easy processes for changing majors, and exploratory first-year curricula.
"Professor quality matters more than program rankings."
Reality: A school ranked #5 in your field doesn't help if professors prioritize research over teaching and you never interact with them.
What to look for: Ask current students about teaching quality, professor accessibility, and whether you'll learn from actual professors or mostly TAs.
"Getting into required classes can be a nightmare."
Reality: At some schools, freshmen struggle to access courses needed for their major, potentially delaying graduation.
What to look for: Ask about the registration system, whether students graduate on time, and if there are enrollment caps on required courses.
About Social Life
"The party reputation isn't always accurate."
Reality: Some "party schools" have thriving communities for non-drinkers. Some "academic" schools have intense Greek life cultures.
What to look for: Ask current students what the actual social scene looks like and what people do if they're not into partying.
"You don't need to know people beforehand—but campus culture matters."
Reality: Students make new friends regardless of whether high school friends attend. But whether the campus feels welcoming, cliquey, inclusive, or divided matters tremendously.
What to look for: Ask about how easy it is to make friends, whether different groups intermingle, and if students feel a sense of belonging.
"Greek life dominance is real at some schools."
Reality: At schools where 40%+ of students join Greek life, non-Greek students sometimes feel excluded from social opportunities.
What to look for: If you're not interested in Greek life, ask what percentage participate and whether non-affiliated students feel welcome.
About Campus & Location
"Weather affects your mood more than you'd think."
Reality: Seasonal affective disorder is real. Gray winters or relentless heat impacts daily happiness.
What to look for: Visit during the academic year (not summer) if possible, and ask students how weather affects campus life.
"Distance from home matters—in both directions."
Reality: Some students love being far from home; others struggle with homesickness. Some need space from family; others miss their support system.
What to look for: Consider the cost and logistics of traveling home, and reflect honestly on whether you need proximity or distance.
"The surrounding area impacts your college experience."
Reality: Rural campuses can feel isolating without a car. Urban campuses offer opportunities but can be expensive. Suburban campuses sit somewhere in between.
What to look for: Explore the area beyond campus—where do students shop, eat, hang out? Is public transportation accessible?
About Money
"Hidden costs add up fast."
Reality: Beyond tuition, students face costs for books, lab fees, activity fees, Greek life, club sports, social activities, spring break, and more.
What to look for: Ask current students about unexpected expenses and whether the meal plan and housing costs are reasonable.
"Scholarship requirements can be stressful."
Reality: Merit scholarships often require maintaining a certain GPA. If you're taking challenging courses or struggling with the transition, that pressure compounds stress.
What to look for: Understand scholarship renewal requirements and whether they're realistic given your academic plans.
"Prestige doesn't always equal better outcomes."
Reality: For many careers, where you went matters less than what you did there. Internships, research, leadership, and grades often outweigh the school name.
What to look for: Research actual employment outcomes for graduates in your intended field. Does the cost justify the career trajectory?
About Support & Resources
"Mental health services have long waitlists."
Reality: Many schools advertise counseling services but have weeks-long waits. During crisis periods (midterms, finals), getting help can be nearly impossible.
What to look for: Ask about counseling availability, wait times, and what happens in a mental health emergency.
"Career services quality varies dramatically."
Reality: Some career centers actively connect students with opportunities; others offer little beyond résumé reviews.
What to look for: Ask about career services resources, whether they help with networking, and how involved they are in landing internships and jobs.
"Advising can make or break your experience."
Reality: Good advisors help you navigate challenges and plan your academic journey. Bad advisors give incorrect information or are impossible to reach.
What to look for: Ask current students about their advising experiences and whether they feel supported in academic planning.
The Big Picture Wisdom
"Fit matters more than rankings."
Almost every student we talked to emphasized this. The #1 school on paper might be the #20 school for you personally. Choose based on where you'll thrive, not where you'll impress people.
"You make your own experience."
Your college experience depends largely on what you make of it. Students at average schools report incredible experiences when they get involved, build relationships, and take advantage of opportunities.
"Talk to current students before deciding."
This was the most common piece of advice. Students wished they'd talked to more current students before committing—especially students in their intended major or with similar backgrounds.
